Tap to Pay on iPhone

Take card payments in person from the Recaudo app: your customer holds their card or phone near your iPhone.

Before you start

You need card payments active in Recaudo and the latest version of the Recaudo app on your iPhone.

Requirements

  • iPhone XS or later.
  • iOS 17.6 or later. On an older version, the app asks you to update in Settings > General > Software Update.
  • A passcode set on the iPhone (Settings > Face ID & Passcode).
  • Card payments active in Recaudo. If you don't have them, go to Set up your account > Turn on card payments in the app and connect Stripe. While Stripe reviews your business, the app shows In review.
  • Your business address. If it's missing, the app asks for it when you turn the feature on.
  • Only the business administrator can accept Apple's terms.

Turn it on

  1. Open the activation

In the app, go to Charge and tap Tap to Pay on iPhone, or open Settings > Tap to Pay on iPhone. Administrators also see it full screen the first time they open the new version of the app.

  2. Confirm your business address

If Recaudo doesn't have it yet, enter street, neighborhood, city, state and postal code. It is used to register your payment location with Stripe.

  3. Accept Apple's terms

Tap “Accept terms and turn on”. Apple shows you the Tap to Pay on iPhone terms and conditions; accept them with your Apple Account.

  4. Wait for setup

The app shows “Setting up Tap to Pay on iPhone…” with a progress percentage. Keep the app open until it finishes.

  5. Learn how to take payments

When setup ends, a guide on how to tap cards opens. Then you see “All set”, with the “Make a test payment” option.

Take a payment

  1. Enter the amount

In Charge, type the amount. If you're collecting a balance, pick the invoice or layaway and the payment is applied to it.

  2. Tap Tap to Pay on iPhone

If the iPhone is still getting ready you'll see “Getting Tap to Pay on iPhone ready”; the payment screen appears right after.

  3. Ask the customer to tap their card

A contactless card, Apple Pay or another digital wallet, near the top of the iPhone.

  4. Wait for the result

You'll see “Processing payment” and then “Payment approved”, “Payment declined” or “Time ran out”.

Note

In the app's point of sale, build the cart and choose Tap to Pay on iPhone as the payment method.

PIN and accessibility

Some banks ask for a PIN. Turn your iPhone toward the customer so they can enter it on the screen. Customers with visual impairments can use the accessibility mode to enter the PIN with VoiceOver.

If the card won't read

Some cards can't complete a contactless payment with a PIN, and sometimes the bank declines the charge. Ask the customer for another contactless card or a digital wallet and try again. If they don't have one, tap “Charge with a payment link”: the customer gets the link and pays from their phone.

Note

If the app closes or loses signal mid-payment, Recaudo checks the result with Stripe within the next minute. If the payment wasn't approved, you get the “Payment not approved” notification.

Receipt

When you finish, tap “Send receipt” and pick WhatsApp, email or another app. The button also appears when a payment is declined, so the customer has a record. The payment is saved in Recaudo with the customer.

Tap to Pay on iPhone settings

In Settings > Tap to Pay on iPhone you'll find:

  • “How to take payments with Tap to Pay on iPhone”: watch the guide again.
  • “If the card won't read”: what to do and how to send a payment link.
  • “Turn off Tap to Pay on iPhone”: that iPhone stops taking payments until you turn it on again.

Tip

Before your first customer, use “Make a test payment” to walk through a full payment.
